If this is the case, then why did China suffer under their system one of the worst famines of the twentieth century? During what was called by Mao "The Great Leap Forward"?
Because they did not distribute the food that they did produce to the poorest, hungriest people. Because they did not accept or solicit food aid from other nations.
So many well-meaning people like Raj Patel focus on the production of food, when the solution to hunger is very very simple. Feed the hungry. Make it a national law and an international law that every hungry person must be fed. Unlike the 1950s, when the Great Leap Forward happened, there is far more than enough food available. Just distribute it for free or at a low enough price that everyone eats. Simple.
World Food Programme does this. Please donate your $27 to them by clicking this sentence.
